yesterday april 12th philadelphia high school parkway west had a health fair that was created by 12th graders for the whole school. the fair had tables that had different topics at each table. for example at the health fair one table a 12th grade student was giving out panthlets about whats the difference between a std and an sti. did you know that a std stands for a sexually transmitted disease. and a sti stands for a sexually transmitted infection. the table gave alot of information about std awareness. the rapid increase of stds between ages 10 and 18. lets teens know what are stds , and how to prevent and protect yourself from getting them. other tables had a topic about abortion , and how to stop abortion. the table gave out a panthlet about there are other options that abortion. did you know many think abortion is killing a life. the panthlet gives information about adpotion. the panthlet gives information about how to look for the right family for your child to be raised by. and information about giving your child up for adoption is a good thing in the long run since some good people are unable to conceive children their self. then at another table it raises awareness of staying in good shape and staying healthy. at that table Urban nutrition initative Mr.Byran gives out oranges and gives out a magazine on great tips for teens to make a healthier dinner for themseleves. did you know obesity is becoming more popular for teens between the ages of 13 through 19. however at another table they gave out condoms and lubricate just incase the teens want to have sex in the future. other tables gave out information about parents being overprotective parents and how sometimes its not allowing and preparing the child to get ready for the real life without depending on their parents for everything. Joel Austin teaches fathers to be fathers and has classes at west philadelphia Ymca on 52 street every tuesday. one other table was named health start it helps young mothers get help while at the early stages of their pregnancies. they offer an support system , resources , gives information about pregnancy. asks the mothers if they have health insurance so they can find ways to help them and their unborn child or their newborns.
i think this health fair was an opener for other students that are in the same age frame and grade as me. 9 times out of 10 some parents may not think their child is not doing drugs , having sex unprotected, over weight and may face the chances of getting type 2 dietbeats. even though i have been witnessed of my closest friends getting pregnant because they didnt think about use a condom or even thinking about birth control , i have seen my friends get abortion after abortion several times. i have lots of friends that dont think about the cautions of having unprotected sex and either end up with H.I.V or even other life threatning Std's.
